We got 17 mallard limits out of the Triangle by 9:15 this morning!  20-25 m.p.h winds whipped the ducks into a frenzy.  The duck hunting right now is magical, and the goose shooting this last weekend was spectacular.  We had 5 smasher hunts and 2 slow ones.

There are only 11 days left in the 2011/2012 hunting season, last chance to get your waterfowl fix! Give us a call in the office to set up your trip!  Ask us about our special kid rates, and remember that in the final week you can shoot geese every day!

Thank you all for your continued support of the Eagle Lakes Crew, It's been a great season!

December 31, 2011

Santa comes thru in the clutch!  After about 10 days of streaky shooting during our busiest month, Santa delivered the best gift of all; a nice warm Chinook wind that blew thousands of ducks and geese back in the zone.  With temperatures in the mid 50’s and lots of wind, the shooting is right back on par with the first two and a half months of the season.  Mid December was tough duck hunting and we really had to work hard at it.  If we didn’t have the triangle, things would have been pretty ugly.  The birds were using lots of other areas but results were poor and groups ended up in the triangle.  We ended up shooting it 8 out of 12 days, sending groups through in shifts.  It was nothing short of magical like always!  It’s hard to put that much pressure on one area but it was one of the few spots that was consistent.  The warming trend has opened back up multiple other areas which are now holding thousands of ducks.  We shot about 15 different ponds this week that were previously not available due to the ice factor.

The honker hunting has been consistent from day one.  The birds have been working great, most landing right in the hole.  (20-35 yard shots).  Occasionally we will get a day where the geese have been using a field regularly and then decide to change up their diet and switch to another field.  Most days we are able to rotate groups into one of our other fields that is producing that day.  We haven’t had to travel very far as most of our hunts have been within 15-20 minutes of the lodge including our own farm, which is on a record pace for goose harvest numbers.

I can’t tell you how cool this week has been for us with mothers and fathers bringing their kids over for our holiday specials kids half price discounts.  Great to see all these smiles with limits of ducks and geese in hand.  Most of the kids say that their trip to Eagle Lakes was a major part of their Christmas bounty!

We still have open dates in January to fill  here and there.  Next week is continued holiday discount pricing.  Let’s keep these kids hunting!

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and we wish you all a happy and prosperous new year!

 December 8, 2011

The duck and goose shooting last week was pretty spectacular.  We were very busy with lots of clients and happy folks.  The hunting overall has been amazing with both harvest numbers and hunting guests at peak levels.

After 51 days of fun, fun, fun, on Monday December 5th the 2011 hunting season actually became a job.  Sunny, bright, clear cold weather  with no wind settled in for the last few days and has made hunting extremely difficult.  The hunting is still very good but lots of all day hunts and not everyone limiting.  The birds are very nocturnal right now and are not playing as well as they should for as many ducks and geese that are in the area.  We have shot more non mallards in the last few days than we have the whole season.  This weather pattern looks like it will be the same for a few more days with the full moon cycle approaching.  Hopefully we can get back to normal smasher hunts soon!

We still haven’t filled all of our dates for the holiday special pricing and the kids ? price cycles yet but with Christmas right around the corner I expect that a trip to the lodge might be in the cards for some.

We have had another fabulous week of hunting. I can’t remember ever having this many ducks around so early in the season. The Northern flights were a good two weeks ahead of schedule with the cool weather pushing them through Canada. We are shooting almost all mallards with the occasional pintail dropping in.

These bright clear cold days through the full moon cycle this past week, made for a few long days but we still got them. We had several shoots this last week that we just pounded them in the afternoons after a slow morning. This past Sunday everything but the triangle was going slow and we ended up having to run all 30 shooters through the triangle with limits for all by 11:00!! It’s pretty special when you have one of the best hunting ponds in the world that never freezes that you can utilize any time you need it. It’s hard to believe that you can run multiple groups 4-5 times a week through the same hunting area and still be off property by 11:00 most days.

The goose shooting is still going great. We are shooting a lot more lessers this past week then we did the first few weeks of the season where we killed all honkers. There are thousands of geese everywhere. I need more goose shooters!! We are running 3-4 goose shoots a day and we could be running 3 or 4 more. We have geese in 5 or 6 fields a day that we are not even shooting!! Lots of my hunters are limiting so quick on ducks that their upgrading to combo hunts and going after geese in the afternoon.

Watch for kids specials coming up all through the holiday cycles!! Let’s keep these kids hunting. It makes a great Christmas gift and not too hard on the pocketbook.
